Using You Tube in the Online Lecture

Students in online courses (especially the helping professions) need as many visual, audio, and tangible exercises as you can supply. Using YouTube videos or other videos to help facilitate discussion around a central set of applied skills can enhance student learning.

Below is an example of a video I use to help facilitate discussion on skills used in brief therapies. This video gives several excellent examples on skill sets used in these therapies.

Students learn by internalizing their lessons. I encourage them to critique the videos, discussing the good and bad and explaining their rationale for their answers. In this process they must place themselves in both the role of the clinician and the client. They always walk away with a fresh, more personable, and more ingrained perspective on the skills sets we are studying than what they learned from their textbook reading, and online discussions alone.
